Generating assets for geometric patterns involves composing a series of shapes arranged in symmetrical formations. These patterns are characterized by consistent sizes and recurring geometries throughout the design.
When it comes to designing a geometric pattern, there is ample scope for creativity. However, I usually follow a basic principle. I am ensuring you that the shapes used in the design roughly have similar dimensions.
Generating components for a perfect seamless pattern
Out of the three types of patterns, seamless ones are the most unencumbered. The reason why these possess such exceptional quality is because they consist of variously sized elements that interlock elegantly to permit repeated replication without interruption.
The major components of your design are referred to elements. As per my usual practice, I create two to four primary elements based on the design’s requirements. These specific parts hold great significance in a pattern. They must effectively manifest its key motif. For example, when creating a pattern, the main illustration would be the four biggest illustration spread evenly throughout it. Each with slight variations artistically incorporated for visual appeal while still maintaining cohesiveness within their overall message. Although the centerpiece elements are prominent, it’s crucial not to overlook the significance of detail fillers in pattern composition. Avoid leaving large empty spaces unless done purposely by utilizing these filler components. Their purpose is to connect the smaller details between larger focal points and ensure that your design has a consistent flow.
My seamless pattern
In my seamless patterns, I incorporated two variations of detail fillers which are secondary elements and abstract details.
The mid-sized illustrations in your design, known as secondary elements, should be coherent with the theme of your pattern. The objective is to occupy the spaces between elements by conveying the same message throughout. In this instance featuring one element, I incorporated comparable mushroom as my secondary illustration choice.
Make sure to add some abstract detail shapes as the final touch. You may find areas where additional elements might not complement well. Don’t be afraid, you can use these filler details to link everything together seamlessly. In my mushroom pattern design, I incorporated x’s and artificial teardrop-like figures for this purpose. Choose whatever shape fits your desired look. The best so long as it blends cohesively with the overall theme of your pattern.
